Preparing for Surgey

To prepare our patient for inpatient surgery at the hospital we provide as much information and patient teaching as possible. This ensures understanding, safety and a speedy recovery. Prior to surgery a plan is developed that includes the following:

Preoperative medical clearance by an internist. This includes a letter of clearance and any pertinent testing that is done (EKG, Chest X-ray, Labs). If specific medical issues are present, additional clearances may be needed. For Example, if you have heart problems, we would need clearance from your cardiologist. If you do not have a general physician or internist we can refer you to one.

Our adult patients attend a surgical teaching class- we ask that our patients attend a preoperative teaching class prior to surgery. This class is held at St. Luke’s Hospital. At the time of the class, you will meet nurses from the operating room, recovery room, as well as the physical therapist. Each will explain what will be done to help you recover as quickly as possible. In addition, discharge planning will be discussed and information on any durable medical equipment you will need when you are discharged.
